You enter the clinic that he’s interning at just in time to hear a childish lisp holler, “Thanks, Oki-sensei!” The little boy with the dripping nose by looks back and waves enthusiastically on his way out, a piece of candy clasped firmly in his moist hand.
Souji runs a hand through his hair and heaves a tired sigh as he steps out of the examination room tired after a day’s work. A smile touches his lips when he catches sight of you. “So how’s my budding pediatrician?” you ask, handing over the warm coffee that he’d ask for. Souji nods in thanks and takes a long sip.
"It’s good," he replies with a sound of satisfaction, removing his lips from the rim of the thermos. "Kondou-sensei is the best mentor. Hijikata’s still a prick though," he laughs, not caring if said doctor is within listening range or not.
The two of you take a seat on one of the waiting room benches, and you glance towards the brightly colored posters encouraging hand washing and the eating of vitamins that decorate the walls of the clinic. “I never thought that you’d be so good with kids,” you comment placidly, and he shrugs.
"They’re easier to deal with than adults," he confesses, and adjusts his glasses with one hand. The look of fond tenderness in his gaze says it all, and the pack of candy in the pocket of his white coat does not go unseen.
The waiting room is the most quiet that it’s been all day, but even then you’re barely able to hear his murmured thoughts. “It’d be nice to have kids, to have that chance this time round.”
You pretend not to see the beginnings of tears in his eyes.
